Which to Choose?

Posted by on 8/13/2013

Dogs or Cats. It seems that everyone has a preference, and an opinion. Who knows what deep psychological motivation drives us to choose one over the other.

Dogs have a lot going for them as pets; they are excellent protectors, offer unconditional love and companionship, and almost always come when called. Dogs are also a great unexpected resource for the disposal of unwanted dinner vegetables, such as Brussel Sprouts or Broccoli, even when it wasn't exactly what they were hoping for.

An interesting side note is that over time, Dogs and their owners begin to look alike. This is fine if you own a Golden Retriever or Collie, but not so good if you own a Dachshund or Basset Hound. Dogs are smart, generally happy, and will chase a ball for hours, which is absolutely perfect, if your only goal in life is to get into the Guinness Book of World Records for throwing a tennis ball a million times! On the down side; Dogs poop... everywhere! And they always expect you to clean up after them.

Cats, on the other hand; are athletic, beautiful, and affectionate. And although they are not very good at home security or protection, Cats have an exceptionally accurate internal clock, which always lets you know precisely when it's time for them to eat. Once fed, they are fully capable of entertaining themselves for hours, with or without your involvement or approval. Cats are also very smart, or at least that's what they want you to think. Ever notice when a Cat does something stupid or clumsy, they give you a look that says; "Oh, I meant to do that". Cats also sleep a lot, which helps keep them out of trouble, and when they lay in your lap and purr, all seems right with the world. The down side? They have very sharp claws. Oh, and their absolute stubborn refusal to ever come when called!

Some people cannot decide between the two, and choose one or more of each animal, creating what is widely known as the "Chaos Factor". The Chaos Factor occurs when random objects such as plants, picture frames, or various knick-knacks suddenly and inexplicably fall to the floor from their resting places on tables and desks, or when food set on counter tops quietly disappears without a trace. Although events occurring during the Chaos Factor are almost always witnessed by both Cats and Dogs, surprisingly, neither is able or willing to recount how these mysterious events could possibly have occurred.
