Silver solder paste
The paste worked easier than using solder flux and silver solder wire.

This WILL work on Sterling.
For the price, this will work on sterling silver; maybe not the first try but it will. With the other option you will fight fire scale and using a hotter torch. Not an option with some designs or components. Just be sure to clean off the first attempt before loading on your second. The price of pure silver does not equate to the price asked for the hotter solder. This product has doubled in price in a year. Not thrilled. But it does the job.

Q:
Will this be good for soldering sterling silver-filled jump rings and wires? (I'm trying to learn to solder jump rings and the ends of my hammered circles together). I don't have any of the supplies yet. Thanks

A:
This solder does not have a high enough melting temperature. It is typically used on Pewter or other white metals. We recommend SO256 for soldering Sterling Silver.

A:
Soldering Sterling Silver requires a higher melting temperature solder such as our SO254, SO255 or SO256. Located at this link:

When just starting to learn, the moment it flows- it just spreads out quickly- is when you take the heat away. Always keep the heat moving. I learned on base metals which can be cheaper, as the process is the same no matter the metal. It also helps to turn the lights down a bit so you can see the color change in the metals as they heat up. I made up a wide mouth jar of denatured alcohol and Boric Acid Powder (pharmacies sell this) which I dip my items in, let air dry, solder, light clean. The mixture keeps fire scale off and the metals are not heat stroked afterwards.
With this low temp solder, beware depending on a joint. It is soft, it will always be soft.
Since no one is selling the butane in many USA communities, because the Gov thinks this will stop the drug hoodlems from processing, I have had to resort to using a larger propane torch. I miss the lightness of my pencil butane torch from Harbor Freight.
