Great Advertising?

Posted by on 11/5/2013

Have you noticed that nowadays, every advertiser's message is always how "great" something is? Why is that? Is everything really "great"? I suppose if these advertisers actually came right out and said their products were only "pretty good" we probably wouldn't buy them. But wouldn't it be refreshing to get a little truth in advertising once in a while. I mean, really, is that "great" new Potato Cooking Glove really all that "great"? I'm sure it's a fine product, but when I think of great, I think of something I can't possibly live without, and I'm pretty sure I can cook a Potato without first placing it in a glove. Or how about the "great" new cat toy. It might be great on the commercial, but I'd guess my cat would have it shredded and destroyed in about fifteen seconds. I wouldn't really consider that "great".

If all we ever hear is how "great" everything is, pretty soon we won't have anything left to compare "great" with. Honest and truthful descriptions like good, adequate, middlin', average, or just plain so-so will cease to exist. All that will remain is "great", and maybe "greater", or greatest" or, umm... dang, there's nowhere left to go!

I for one, am not going to stand idly by and let the English language be destroyed by a bunch of unimaginative advertisers. From now on, I'm going to insist that our advertisements at JewelrySupply use more accurate descriptions, and that we stop throwing around the word "great" every chance we get. So, beginning today, here's our new slogan. Pretty catchy, isn't it?

Super-great products, super-great prices, and super-great advertising!
