A Fairy Tale?

Posted by on 6/25/2013

Long ago, on the northern coast of a land known as California, a Despicable King was looking for inexpensive ways to rid his kingdom of trash and garbage, figuring that he could then keep the money he saved for himself. He came up with the idea to simply dump the garbage onto a nearby beach, burn it, and let the remains be carried away by the ocean at high tide. This went on for years, and the area became known as Garbage Beach. But, as is the way of garbage, it didn’t remain where it was dumped, and eventually floated onto neighboring beaches. The citizens rose up in protest, and faced with overwhelming pressure, the Despicable King finally agreed to stop using the beach for a dumpsite. Garbage Beach was closed, and because of the thousands, perhaps millions, of broken bottles and other sharp pieces of glass, a high fence was erected around the area, and no one was allowed near the beach.

Until one day, many years later, when a small child wandered through a hole in the fence, and soon found herself smack in the middle of Garbage Beach. But instead of a dangerous beach of broken glass, she discovered a wondrous, shimmering beach of beauty and color! It seems that, over time, the ocean had slowly reclaimed the area, washing away any remaining garbage and grinding and polishing the broken glass into the most incredible shapes, turning the former Garbage Beach into a shimmering, colorful Glass Beach!

Word spread quickly, and people came from far and wide to see the wondrous beach, to walk along it’s beautiful, colorful shoreline, and maybe even take home a small glass souvenir. Of course, as soon as the Despicable King saw the beach, he decried it was off limits to anyone not a member of the Royal Court. Since he had created it, he argued, he owned it. “No Trespassing” signs were posted, and hefty fines were levied on all who dared defy the Kings orders.

But, the citizens had a plan of their own. At each and every opportunity they snuck onto the beach and removed some of the beautiful glass. Sometimes it was just a single piece. Other times, it was a handful, or even a bucket full! It took almost twenty five years, but eventually all of the glass was removed, and Glass Beach looked exactly the same as it had looked so many years before. The King's private, beautiful Glass Beach was gone…. Or was it? Instead of this incredible sight existing only for the Despicable King, the Glass Beach was now spread far and wide throughout the land, to be shared and enjoyed by everyone, for generations to come.

And what of the despicable King you ask? Well, as in any good fairy tale, the King was soon overthrown, and spent the remainder of his days hiding out in, of all places, a garbage dump on the outskirts of the kingdom.

The moral of our story; Sometimes you find beauty in the most unusual places. Oh, and Despicable Kings suck!
