Abalone are small to very large-sized edible sea snails. The thick inner layer of the shell is composed of nacre or mother-of-pearl, which in many species is highly iridescent. The color of the shell varies from species to species and may reflect the animal's diet. Colors can range from silvery white, pink, red and green-red, as well as deep blues, greens and purples.
