Cabochon (sometimes spelled Cabachon) refers to a gemstone that has been shaped and polished to create a smooth, convex top with a flat bottom. Typically, softer material gemstones are cut into Cabochon form, including Opal, Onyx, Turquoise and Lapis. Natural Stone, Bone, Wood and Shell also make excellent Cabochons. Many harder gemstones such as Amethyst, Peridot, or Quartz, are also occasionally cut into Cabochon form, rather than their traditional, faceted form. Because the bottom of Cabochon cut gemstones are flat, they can be glued into place, rather than "set" into mountings. Cabochons are great for inlay, wire work, and even Scrapbooking!
