Serpentine is a group of common rock forming hydrous magnesium iron phyllosilicate. Serpentine may refer to any of 20 varieties belonging to the serpentine group. California's state rock, its believed that the name serpentine either comes from the serpent like colors and patterns the rock exhibits, or from an old belief that the gemstone gave protection against snake bites.
Found all over the world, Canada, Northern California, Afghanistan, China, France and Italy are some the more notable localities from which serpentine has been discovered. |
