|
A nut-bearing tree, Aleurites moluccana, (candlenut tree) native to Hawaii, Polynesia and South Seas Islands of Malaysia, the Malay Peninsula, and the Philippines. Worn for centuries and reserved only for the reining chief of the Hawaiian Islands, it is now the most popular seed or nut lei in Hawaii. Today, they are worn by both men and women for formal or informal events. Kukui Nuts have also been used for centuries as a source of dyes and spices as well as being used for carvings and oil (which is why Kukui Nuts are also referred to as candelnuts). |
