Iolite is derived from the Greek word “Ios”, which means violet. It was sometimes referred to as “water sapphire” because it was commonly found in water deposits. It can be mistaken for sapphires.
Iolite is known for its pleochroism properties, meaning that if viewed from different angles, it changes color. For this reason, the Vikings used Iolite to determine the direction of the sun on cloudy days. They would cut the Iolite into thin plates and would use the lens to help navigate the seas (believe it or not, the Vikings found the first polarizing filters!)
While Iolite is usually blue, inclusions of Hematite can cause a reddish sheen. It is found in Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar, Brazil, and the U.S. It is said to open one’s psychic talents, and excellent use for crown chakras. Said to help the wearer with detoxification and heal sore throats and blisters.
